Projecting clocks to buy online

Self Servicing

It is possible for the customer to service their Timebeam Projecting Clock themselves, by following our simple step-by-step guides:

Please note that there are no user (or By Design) servicable parts in the case of the Microsweep, Maxisweep or Maxi-Ceiling - the instructions for self-servicing below relate only to our previous range of models: New Classic; Classic Commercial; Semi-Recess; Powerhouse and the Original Classic. If you experience difficulties with any of our current range of projecting clocks, please ensure:

  • The bulb is in working order
  • The battery is in working order

Mechanism removal and replacement

Removal of existing mechanism

  • Locate mechanism in plastic dust cover projecting from side of body
  • With pliers, remove strain bush that secures curly cable
  • Remove two screws (if fitted)
  • Remove time set knob (by pulling off)
  • Slide dust cover* down curly cable so that electrical connections are exposed
  • Disconnect wires from junction block
  • Release screw on top surface of body (near lens)
  • Slide mechanism out of locating slots in body

N.B: On New Classic the dust cover clips onto the body, to remove - squeeze in sides and pull off (some force may be required).

Fitting new mechanism

  • Slide mechanism into aperture in body and into retaining slots
  • Retain mechanism by single screw in body
  • Thread curly cable through hole at corner of dust cover from outside to inside
  • Connect wires (as follows) to motor:
    • Brown to L
    • Blue to N
    • Yellow/green to EARTH
  • Pull curly cable back through hole in dust cover
  • Slide dust cover* up into position around mechanism
  • Retain with two screws, taking care not to damage wires within*
  • Fit strain bush (to secure curly cable where it enters dust cover) as follows:
    • Fit to indentations in curly cable left from previous bush fitting
    • Squeeze in place with pliers
  • Push time set knob through hole in dust cover firmly onto shaft of motor

N.B: On New Classic the dustcover clips into position, align correctly and firmly push on until 'click' is heard and cover is fully in position.

IMPORTANT: DO CHECK THAT BRASS GEARS ARE LYING PARALLEL AND POSITION HAS NOT BEEN DISTORTED. YOU CAN GENTLY BEND TOP GEAR ON SPINDLE SO THAT IT IS IN CORRECT POSITION TO OTHER GEARS, BUT DO NOT ROTATE GEARS BY HAND.

N.B: Replacement mechanisms can be supplied by mail order, please contact us. Old mechanisms should be returned to By Design.

Gear / glass replacement and cleaning

When dust is rotating with the second hand

Blow or wipe it away with soft, lintless cloth. There shouldn't be a need to dismantle the unit. For other dust, or where the above has been ineffective, see the dismantling instructions below.

Stripping down to gears

  • Set time on unit to 12 o'clock
  • Un-plug from electrical supply
  • Remove mechanism from your unit, by:
    • Removing the top screw on the main tube of the unit (by the lens)
  • Rest mechanism on its back with brass ring facing upwards
  • Undo the three screws
  • Carefully lift off the ring
  • Carefully lift off the three aluminium gears
  • Wipe or blow of any dust off the main plate and the clock face image glass
  • Ensure all dust is removed

Fitting new gears

  • Remove the 3 screws and the brass ring from assembly supplied
  • Lay the three new aluminium gears onto the existing plate over the clock face
  • Rotate so that the hour and minute are set to 12 o'clock and lay onto main plate
  • Fit new brass ring
  • Tighten screws
  • Re-fit mechanism into main tube of product
  • Secure with the single screw

Reusing existing gears

  • Clean glass in each gear and the clock face glass in the plate
  • Reconnect unit and hold each gear individually in the mechanism slot
  • Project an image onto the wall to check for any dust
  • Check for dust in this manner with the main plate also
  • Re-fit as with new gears
  • Be sure to fit in order of:
    • Hour gear, then
    • Minute gear, and finally
    • Second gear
  • Re-fit mechanism into main tube of product
  • Secure with the single screw

You may find that the hour and minute hands are not totally at the 12 position, if this is the case:

  • Turn time-set knob until the minute hand is at 12, then, with a screwdriver
  • Rotate the bottom (closest to plate) brass drive gear one way or the other until the hour hand is also in position
  • Ensure that the minute and hour hands are directly aligned at the 12 o'clock position

N.B: Replacement gear sets can be supplied by mail order, please contact us.
